Music Marketing 101: How to Create a Compelling Production Portfolio That Sticks Out

While most employers request either a CV or Resumé when applying for jobs, within creative industries such as music, film or graphic design, you will be typically asked to submit a portfolio, which, unlike a CV, focuses less on your qualifications (whether academic or professional) and more on the work (i.e. – output) you’ve produced. This is typically a collection of your creative projects – original songs that you’ve published, music you’ve made for other people – and even accolades or awards you’ve won for your effort.

Your goal is to showcase your best work and convince the person browsing through of your competence and experience as a music producer. In order to do this you’ll need to present a portfolio that can demonstrate your experience and skillset as clearly and convincingly as possible to prospective clients – whether a band, a film producer, or even an advertising company. Doing this can be a daunting task, which is why we wanted to share some tips to get you started in the right direction.

Tip 1: The Content

Your portfolio should contain work that showcases not only your ability to produce varied kinds of music, but also the ability to wear multiple hats within the music business. This means that the work you put in your portfolio should demonstrate technical proficiency (i.e. – in Music Theory, Programming, etc.), genre flexibility & professional acumen. This is important because clients often look out for people who do great work, but are also great to work with (i.e. – Are good collaborators, communicators & have good work ethic).

Tip 2: The Presentation

Once you’ve selected the content you want to add to your portfolio, the next thing to consider is how to present it in a way that’s clear & captivating. There are two things to consider:

a) Communication

The way you speak about your work has an impact on how it’s perceived. Providing context about your creative process for each project and being clear about your contributions and the outcome of your work, will come a long way in demonstrating your competency. Make sure that your portfolio clearly emphasises why the work you do is valuable.

b) Design & Layout

Choosing the right platform to host your portfolio is also key. Some people build websites that host their work and continuously update the content as and when they publish new music. For others, a PDF document is more convenient as it can be shared easily and doesn’t require that you navigate an entire website.

Ultimately, what you choose should be visually and tonally consistent with your brand/artist identity, and easily navigable and accessible by anyone. You should be able to convey more with less, leveraging imagery and interactive content to “show” rather than “tell” people what you’re capable of. To be clear, this doesn’t mean skimping out on explanations and only using imagery. Rather this means designing your portfolio in a way that your work can speak for itself.

Tip 3: Promote your portfolio

Once you’ve strung together your work into a coherent and cohesive catalogue, make sure to share it with as many people as possible. Leverage social media, networking events, and professional connections to get the word out about the services you offer, and ultimately turn your portfolio into a conversation starter. Much of the music industry, especially in India, is driven by networking, meaning that your success as a commercial producer is contingent on who you know and how your target audience and clientele perceive you.
